Go!
Genesis 15:6
Abraham is known as the “Father of Faith”. As it says in Genesis 15:6, “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.” What is it that makes Abraham known for his faithfulness? I believe it is how he responded in belief to God’s call. Let’s look at a couple of examples.
The initial call of Abram is recorded in Genesis 12.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
Genesis 12:1-4
Note the simplicity of the sequence of events here. God tells Abram to go. “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him.” This simple and quick obedience is the essence of faithfulness.
Now let’s look at another key event in Abraham’s journey of faith. Many years later, when Abraham was well over 100 years old, God again commands him to go.
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Genesis 22:1-3
Again, we see Abraham responding to God’s command quickly and without question. “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Abraham had his failures as well but in these two key calls on his life, he responds with immediate, faithful obedience. Let us follow his example as we trust and obey the One who is always faithful.
